Sunday

Compartmentalising

Most people compartmentalise their tai chi training.
They attend one lesson a week and do no training between lessons at home.
When the student thinks about class on the day of class their brain begins to refresh the components associated with class.
By the time the individual arrives in class, they are once more familiar with tai chi, the class and what to expect.
But the memories from the previous week are a little sketchy

Wednesday

Daily practice

A tai chi student who trains every morning between lessons is far more likely to remember the art than a student who only practices once a week in class.
The movements and exercises are familiar because they do them every day.
Frequency creates habit patterns in the body.

Qigong

If you can remember fairly easy qigong movements, you can employ them in everyday life and improve your health.
By starting modestly, your brain is not overwhelmed by information.Your memory improves.

Saturday

If your brain is anticipating something or you are daydreaming, what exactly are you trying to remember at a later date? The activity itself, the train of thought or the daydream?

Expectations

People have naive expectations regarding memory.
We usually remember what we need for day-to-day functionality.
The name of somebody we worked with 10 years ago is simply not relevant since we do not encounter them with any regularity

What did you eat for your evening meal on the 15th of August three years ago?

Wednesday

Memory problems

A lot of adults worry about problems with their memory.
Sometimes they may have legitimate reason to be concerned.
However, the problem often lies with expectations and use of the brain, not with the functionality of memory itself

What are the martial skills (kung fu)?

In combat, tai chi chuan uses evasion, stickiness and sensitivity rather than brute force.
The muscles remain relaxed at all times and the body moves as one whole unit (neigong).
There are many tai chi chuan martial skills in the syllabus, including shuai jiao (take downs), chin na (seizing), jing (internal power), san sau (fixed sets), san da (freeform combat), form application, weapons and self defence.

Tuesday

What is tai chi chuan?

Tai chi chuan/taijiquan is a style of kung fu once practiced by the Manchu Emperor's elite palace guards.
There are 5 traditional styles of tai chi chuan: Chen, Yang, Wu, Hao and Sun.

The art is quietly challenging; requiring patience, hard work, commitment, mindfulness and composure.
Students work towards the cultivation of a high degree of physical skill and can reasonably expect to practice the art for most of their lives.

Thursday

Friday

What can you (the student) do?

On one level, the student is seeking to gauge the instructor's ability. At the same time, they are wanting a fixed answer.
Herein lies the problem.
Combat is anything but fixed. There are no guarantees. No security.
What the instructor can do is a secondary concern. What matters more is what the student would do...

Real tai chi

Tai chi involves a multi-layered approach to the cultivation of healthvitality and wellbeing
The depth of study available within a bona fide system of tai chi is incredible.
A student can quite literally explore the art for their entire lifetime and still discover new mysteries, secrets and skills.

Tuesday

Attention seeking

A time waster is a person who comes to the training hall with no intention of taking a lesson.
They want to check out the class, chat, discuss their medical problems and be sold on tai chi.
They tend to make a lot of noise, fuss and generally make a spectacle of themselves.

Monday

What would you do if...

A common question asked by beginners is "What would you do if..."
They suggest a variety of scenarios in which you are attacked and expected to counter.
How do you counter a kick?
What about this hold?
Can you deal with a headbutt?
Will it work if the attacker has a knife?

No time wasters please

Visitors often ask if they can:
  1. Take a free lesson
  2. Watch the class
  3. Seek medical advice
  4. Have a chat about tai chi
Unfortunately we do not offer these options.
We are a business not a charity. We are not performers. We are not qualified to give medical advice.

If you want to know more about tai chi, read this website or try out the class for yourself.
Come to practice, not to talk.

Sunday

Our ethos

Our aim is to teach tai chi with sincerity, good humour and integrity.
By following the authentic training methods detailed in the Tai Chi Classicsour lessons are always thought-provoking, balanced and thorough.
In addition to qigong and tai chi for health, we teach the complete tai chi chuan (martial artsyllabus.

What we offer

We offer a very high standard of tuition from instructors with decades of experience.
There is a syllabus in place to ensure that the tai chi is taught in a consistent, structured, methodical way.
Students work towards a comprehensive understanding of tai chi, whole-body strength and the ability to use their body in an intelligent, healthy manner.
