Dissuasion

Master Waller actively dissuades any student from becoming a lineage student.
The obligation is not for the half-hearted.

Walking in your instructor's shoes may prove to be vastly more demanding than a student has anticipated.

Sincerity

Lineage candidates are given one year probation in which they must prove their sincerity.

Master Waller does not have any lineage students. No student has demonstrated the integrity necessary to perpetuate the art.

Family first

It is very common for students to imagine that private lessons and long-term practice with an instructor guarantees receipt of the inner teachings.  
This is naive.
Traditionally, the secret workings of an art were passed on to family members first.
After family members, lineage students were the next consideration.

Everyone else was taught relative to their degree of commitment, and this seldom entailed the secret material.

The opportunity

Sifu Waller offers every martial student the opportunity to become a lineage student.
The student must meet certain criteria:

1. 3rd dan black belt
2. A good level of skill
3. A pattern of ongoing progress
4. A nice relationship with both the instructor and other students
5. No attitude problems/ego/arrogance

Suitable candidates will be told what lineage training entails.

Choice

Not many students will get to be lineage students.
It is not a matter of playing favourites. It is a question of priorities and commitment.
Ultimately, the choice lies with the student.

The keenest students will be asked if they are willing to make the commitment to learn everything the instructor has to offer.
Are they prepared to work harder than any other student?
Are they willing to be pushed harder than any other student?

Indoor students

The deeper meaning beneath the superficial is a recurrent theme in traditional Japanese culture. In the art of garden design, it is actually given a name, hiegakure, which means "that hidden from ordinary sight." The average shlub strolls through a Japanese garden gawking at the sights, entirely unaware of the paths beneath his feet. To the connoisseur, however, these same paths offer a lifetime of study and appreciation. Here the paths are smooth, hurrying one along. There, the stones are rough, irregular, or stepped, causing the visitor to slow down, something planned by the garden's designer, who may have wanted visitors to pause at a certain point.

Class members

Taking private lessons and/or training with an instructor for many years does not make you an 'indoor student'.

If a class member wants an indoor relationship with the instructor, the process is quite formal.
The student must become a 'lineage student' and this entails meeting certain criteria and fulfilling specific obligations.

Indoor, but not lineage

Family members are always offered the inner teachings.
This makes them an 'indoor student' but not necessarily a 'lineage student'.
To become a lineage student they must undergo the bai shi ceremony and make the formal pledges.

Prove yourself

If a student wants to be considered for lineage, they need to approach Sifu Waller and persuade him that they are serious enough.
Sifu Waller will assess the student and determine suitability. 
Lineage is for the instructor to decide, not the student.
The instructor must be confident that the future of the art resides in capable hands.
