Cross-training tai chi alongside other
martial arts is a recipe for failure.
When you start an external martial art, the instructor moulds what you have into
something useful.
In tai chi we want you to throw away what
you have and start again.
People argue that there is no difference
between internal and external or that both can be trained side-by-side.
This seems an odd perspective given that the two approaches differ in almost
every measurable way.
The skills you acquire in an external class will almost
universally be regarded as mistakes in a tai chi class,
and corrected as such.
